Newspaper clipping from the Louisiana Star featuring Josefine Guerrero's arrival at Carville Leprosarium in 1948. It includes a black and white photograph of Josefina Guerrero, a Filipina woman wearing a black and white dress with a floral collar and puffed sleeves, with dangly earring and her hair cut short. The text reads: "Joey" Arrives in Carville USA. Eagerly awaiting the arrival of Mrs. Josefina Guerrero, known to us as "Joey" and to the world as a great war heroine, 25 patients of this hospital sat on the front porch of the infirmary from 3:30 until 6:30 Sunday morning, July 11th.
When Joey stepped out of the station ambulance, Sister Boniface, night nurse, was at hand, ready to offer any needed assistance. However, none was needed and Joey smiled graciously as she accepted an armful of red roses presented by the Filipino patients. We have 17 male Filipino patients, but Joey is the first woman Filipina patient to be received at this hospital.
